If you wish to buy a pension annuity you must make an important one-off decision. Once you reach 55 years of age, you are allowed to start converting your pension into an income even if you decide not to stop working.

Presently, 25% of your pension fund can be withdrawn tax-free. You will therefore find yourself in the position of between 75 to 100% of your total pension coming in the form of an annuity. There are a variety of ways in which you can access annuities.

Open Market Option

As a pensioner you will be able to choose the provider of your annuity. Given both the spectrum of choice and the importance of the decision, it is crucial that you have the best possible advice.

Drawdown

A further option to consider is leaving a portion of your pension invested whilst accessing a different part of it. As long as it falls within the amount allowed by the government, you can change the amount you withdraw as your circumstances alter.
