Lunchtime yesterday was not my usual sandwich and drink at my desk whilst try not to spill anything over my laptop. Instead it was an absolute delight. The Felixstowe Lunch club set up by myself in January and now in Partnership with the Felixstowe Flyer had a very entertaining and delightful guest speaker.
Kim from the South Kiosk at Martello Park came along with her lovely cakes for us to sample and the most exquisite slightly sparkling soft juices. For those of you that do not know Felixstowe all that well the Kiosk can be found down near the manor end at the far end of Sea Road where the development of Bloor homes have been built.
This original land once was home to the old Herman de Stern building which was a fine Edwardian building in its heyday, and dominated the skyline at the southern end of the resort.
It provided a place for men from London to convalesce from serious illnesses, with Felixstowe’s bracing and clean sea air – in complete contrast to the smog-clogged capital – the perfect tonic.
It had two large wards and 12 single rooms were pristine, staffed by caring nurses, devoted to their patients. Most of the rooms had superb sea views.
After it closed as a convalescent home in the 1970s, it had a variety of uses, including as a social club for metering manufacturers Sangamo, whose factory was in nearby Langer Road, and also as a community centre for the area.
It was demolished in November 2006 to make way for the new south seafront development.
South Kiosk is a wonderful place to visit if you are alone and looking for a place to relax and unwind or have children or grandchildren and looking for something to entertain them for a few hours. It is located next to a fantastic new play park including a sandpit and giant swing. There is also a water pad alongside in which children can run through activating the water sprinklers where lots of laughter and giggling can be heard especially if an adult is close by.
I took my girls down on Monday afternoon and I sat with a lovely cappuccino and slice of Coffee and Walnut cake (I am sure it had no calories) whilst they played and had an ice cream along with some of the cake as it was absolutely huge!
I felt very relaxed on my own and the member of staff Zara in the Kiosk had a chat with me and made me feel very welcome. My only regret was not bringing along my book!
The aim of the Felixstowe monthly business lunches are to offer a great opportunity for like-minded people, in local businesses, and all of the surrounding areas in suffolk, Trimley St Mary, Trimley St Martin and Kirton alike to get together in a relaxed yet business focused atmosphere to discuss business as well as local issues.
We are keen to encourage the business community of Felixstowe and surrounding areas to use the services of local businesses. The lunches will provide the opportunity to discover and meet businesses on your doorstep that could help you.
The Felixstowe Lunch club meets every 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Brook Hotel in Orwell Road Felixstowe from 1-2pm with a guest speaker talking about a Business locally.
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday 10th September and I look forward to welcoming some new faces. Please find details on my website http://www.debbiedayifa.co.uk/felixstowe-lunches/ or feel free to contact me.
Until the next time,
Deb
