The Fitness regime continues..
Following on from my new fitness regime in my wisdom I decided that I would like to do something for charity associated with my new found hobby. Low and behold something came up at the Felixstowe Lunches. We had a guest arrive Fiona who was an event organiser and fund raiser for St Elizabeth’s Hospice in Ipswich. Now I already knew of the great work that the Hospice does however I had no idea how much all of this cost.
Fiona kindly offered to be a guest speaker at the March’s meeting that was held at the Brook Hotel in Felixstowe. She explained the work that they got involved with along with the amount of money that is needed to be raised.
Fiona also told us about an event that was happening to raise money for the Hospice. THE MIDNIGHT WALK 2015. This was either a walk or run your choice of ,5 8 or 13 miles (more on this later). I suggested to Suzanne who is a regular at my Felixstowe Lunch that maybe we should sign up. It was going to tick all the boxes of what I was hoping to achieve combining my exercise with a Fund raising event – Perfect.
Fiona explained that if we signed up straight away we would receive a discount on the initial registration fee. We decided that we would sign up to run the 5 miles.
Time lapsed and although I was still doing my fitness classes I had not actually got round to doing any running. I spoke to Chantell at Fit fusion about a running personal training session with about a month to go she said it would be no problem getting me up to speed!!
However, as my life is so busy that is where this conversation ended. I completely forgot about my challenge until the week before where I thought that the run must be coming up soon. It was the following Saturday night.
Well no time for training now I was just going to have to hope that my fitness classes at the Felixstowe International College had been enough and wing it.
The morning of the run I gave Suzanne a call just to check arrangements; it was starting at the Ipswich Town Football Club. Now all along in my head I thought the run was 5 kilometres as I had done this for another event before. It wasn’t until that morning speaking to Suzanne that I realised it was actually 5 MILES. OPS.. Well now turning back now…
When we arrived at Ipswich Town Football Club the atmosphere was electric… Suzanne and I saw lots of people and different lanes and we weren’t sure which one we should be in so we asked a couple of ladies “is this the 5 mile runners” their responses laughing and joking “Do we look like runners no I don’t think so” Well Suzanne and I went to find the runners laughing our heads off.
Building up to the race we had a very inspiration lady tell us her story about her terminal illness cancer and how the hospice had helped her not only emotionally but also physically to tick off some of the things she want to achieve before the inevitable.
Now it was that time me and Suzanne set off OH MY GOD the 1st mile was an absolute bitch my breathing was so bad I though everyone was able to hear me. However then things settled down and I started to get into my stride. We ended up going of course slightly so probably did more than the 5 Miles. We ran to the hospice had a quick drink and then set off for the journey back. This was easier than the one there as it was slightly downhill! Suzanne and I crossed the finish line in 58 minutes and I felt absolutely fantastic I had achieved my first 5 mile run.
NOT only that we had all helped raised much needed funds for the Hospice…
Until the next time,
Debbie.
